On the art of Chainmaille - Weave - 6in1 european

6in1 is similar to the 4in1 - difference as the namy says is that each ring must pass 6 others.

On the art of Chainmaille - part 5 Basic 4 in 1 european

The most common weave in Europe was the 4in1 shown here. Its simple and easy to start with.

Here are two basic examples of winding coils.

By hand
A bit clumsy - I forgot to tighten the vice.

With a drill

We got coils now. After they are cut into rings, its time for a basic weave.

On the art of Chainmaille - part 3 Materiel

The materiel you need to make the rings is wire. The most common and widespread is galvanised wire. Its easy to find and cheap so its good to start with this. There are more exotic base materiel - brass, copper, etc but they are more expensive and not universal in useage.

Where to find it.

1 Tool shops. - Bad option for a large project. While they may have it in stock the price tag will be twice as big. If there is no alternative of course this will be your place to supply.

2 Construction materiel warehouses.  The better option in the case - warehouses sell cheap and in bulk, which makes them the preferable option in supply.

Now to turn it into coils

On the art of Chainmaille - part 2 Power tools

Power tools can save a lot of time spent on making the rings. The drawbacks are of course - they use power and are quite noisy so not always useable at home.

Drill

A simple drill can reduce the time spend on winding the coils tenfold. It requires more setup than winding by hand, as you must be able to secure the mandrel while using the drill and also to hold the wire onto the mandrel while winding. This can be achieved in many ways - again - improvise.

Drawbacks
Drills consume power and are a bit noisy, so you can't do it all the time and you can't do it everywhere.

Angle grinder.

Angle grinders can be used to speed up the cutting of the rings by using very thin cutting discs. Again it requires more set up than cutting by hand as you will have to devise a way to "feed" the coils to the grinder disc so that it cuts the rings out.

Drawbacks

Angle grinders are noisy just as drills and apart from electricity they also need new discs often which makes them an expensive alternative. Unlike drills, you must also follow safety precautions -  wearing goggles and gloves, etc to avoid eye injury or losing a finger or two.

This is all well and good, but you need something to make the rings out of.

On the art of Chainmaille - Part 1 - Basic tools

Since I am an avid maker of chainmaille, one of the things I planned to use this blog for is to set out several guides on it, from tools, through basic weaving and more exotic weaves and decorations. Starting without delay.

BASIC TOOLS

The making of butted mail(the difference between butted and riveted maille will be explained later) requires several relatively simple things. Now you can obviously get better and more useful gear later on - powertools to speed up things being the prime example, but these are the absolutely basic things you would require to make something with no power, except for manual labour.

For the weaving.

2x ordinary pliers.

Make sure its a decent pair and you can work comfortably with them. Slight modifications like wrapping the handles with tape of some kind is a good idea.

Sharp nosed pliers.

You won't be needing these in the start, but a tight fit, or working with small rings will require them.

For cutting the coils into rings.

A small bolt-cutter.

You want to buy a small one that can easily be operated with 1 hand only, or with 1 hand once you've locked the second handle into something, like a vise for example.

Making the coils.

That would require a mandrel of some sorts fixed to a handcrank. There are many things you can make them from, you literally have to look around and you will find it. The basic rule is, that the mandrel should be a bit smaller than the size of rings you want. For example, if you have a 8mm in diameter mandrel, you will get 9mm inner diameter rings.

Those are the very basic tools you will need to make chainmail, and they can be aquired at any tools shop for no more than a dozen or so euro or dollars or whatever local currency you use, if you don't have some of them already(like the pliers). Next thing in line - implementation of power tools.

Presentation

Now I doubt anyone will read this in short order, but it hardly matters, I set this up to have somewhere to write a few things down, lay out a few guides and manuals, maybe get stuck into good olde political commentary or just discuss the weather like a fine ol'e gentleman.
